My thesis projectÂ
I wanted to focus on my culture, as a proud member of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe in the state of Arizona. One of twenty-two federally recognized tribes in the state.
I want to be able to show myself and who I am as an indigenous woman, in a male respected culture. Asking for permission from the elders in the community I wanted to take part in showing more Yaqui art.
Being able to show case my culture is a huge risk as it is sacred to be only done by men.
These illustrations are done with paying respect to my culture and to steer away from the traditional aspect of the art to a more contemporary feel. I also wanted to navigate it towards the younger audience, for them to pursue a creative passion for the culture in a fun way.
